LUANDA, Sept. 30 — Six members of the same family were killed by a lightning strike amid heavy rains in Angola’s central Bie Province, the Angola Press Agency reported Tuesday.
The incident occurred Monday in Andulo municipality, where the victims had taken shelter from the rain inside a hut on a farm, according to Vasco Chioca, spokesperson for the provincial command of the Civil Protection and Fire Service. Chioca said the lightning strike caused a fire in the hut, killing the father, his wife, who was eight months pregnant, and their four children aged between six and 13. Local authorities are working to provide support to the bereaved family and assist with funeral arrangements, the report said. The Civil Protection and Fire Service urged residents to take greater precautions during the rainy season and avoid staying in fragile huts, under isolated trees or in open areas during thunderstorms.
