PRAIA, Aug. 31 — Cabo Verde’s main opposition party, the Movement for Democracy (MpD), has endorsed former Justice Minister Joana Rosa for the Nov. 15 presidential election, the party said in a statement.
The decision won the support of 85 percent of the members of the party’s National Directorate at a meeting held Saturday. It followed discussions on the country’s political situation and an assessment of the candidates seeking the party’s backing, according to the statement. Rosa, 61, announced her presidential bid on June 24 after serving for five years as justice minister in the MpD government. A native of Maio Island, Rosa previously served in the National Assembly, where she led the MpD parliamentary group. She also served two terms as president of the Maio Municipal Assembly. Presidential candidates must submit their applications to the Constitutional Court by Sept. 16, according to the electoral calendar released by the National Electoral Commission.
