BERLIN, Aug. 19 — Borussia Dortmund has strengthened its midfield with the signing of Netherlands international Joey Veerman from PSV on a contract through June 2031, the Bundesliga club announced Tuesday.
The 27-year-old, who will wear No. 25, joins Dortmund after four-and-a-half seasons at PSV, where he won three Dutch league titles, two domestic cups and three Super Cups. Veerman led the Eredivisie with 14 assists in 30 league appearances last season and finished his PSV career with 31 goals in 198 appearances across all competitions. “Borussia Dortmund is a big club in Europe, and I am proud to be part of this club now,” Veerman said. “I am hugely excited to be here and want to celebrate success together with BVB.” Dortmund managing director for sport Lars Ricken said strengthening central midfield had been a priority following the departures of Pascal Gross and Salih Ozcan, while Emre Can is expected to operate in central defense after returning to the team. “Joey is a player who will help us enormously with his abilities,” Ricken said.
Veerman joined Volendam at age 6 in 2005 and made his professional debut in 2016. He moved to Heerenveen in 2019 before joining PSV in January 2022. Dortmund sporting director Ole Book praised Veerman’s creativity, technique and vision, saying the midfielder had shown he could consistently perform at the highest level. Veerman has earned 16 senior caps for the Netherlands since making his debut in 2023, scoring once, and was part of the Dutch squad that reached the semifinals of Euro 2024 in Germany. He has also made 44 appearances in European club competition. PSV coach Peter Bosz described Veerman in May as “the best passer in the Netherlands,” while former Dortmund forward Donyell Malen has also praised his distribution. Veerman has already played at Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park, having faced the German club with PSV in the Champions League round of 16 in 2024.
