MOGADISHU, July 27– A new solar-powered health center built by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Jana Cabdalle, Jubaland, will provide essential healthcare services to about 10,000 people, the UN migration agency said on Sunday.
The facility, located 60 kilometers northeast of Kismayo, serves both the town and surrounding villages. “This health facility represents an important step toward improving access to essential healthcare services for communities along the Kismayo-Afmadow corridor,” Prestage Murima, deputy chief of mission at IOM Somalia, said in a statement. Murima said that by bringing essential services closer to communities and working closely with local authorities, initiatives like this strengthen regional systems and improve daily life for families. “Such investments contribute to Somalia’s long-term recovery and strengthen community resilience in the face of pressures that can drive displacement,” she added. The IOM said the construction of the health center aligns with government-led stabilization initiatives in conflict-affected regions.
The agency said access to healthcare had been identified by both government officials and local residents as an urgent recovery priority, helping ease conflict-related pressures as communities rebuild. Mohamed Hussein, director general of Jubaland’s Ministry of Health, said the opening of the center significantly improves access to medical care for communities that previously had to travel long distances to reach the nearest health facility, often exposing themselves to security risks. “We are pleased that the center will help our communities rebuild their lives, particularly during periods of hardship and drought, when limited resources often heighten tensions and deepen suffering,” Hussein added.
