CONAKRY, July 9 — Hadja Andree Toure, former first lady of Guinea’s First Republic, died in Morocco on Wednesday at the age of 92, the Guinean presidency announced on its official Facebook page.
Born in 1934 in Macenta, as the wife of Guinea’s first president Ahmed Sekou Toure, she served as first lady from the country’s independence in 1958 until his death on March 26, 1984. “In this time of mourning, my thoughts, along with those of the entire nation, are with her family and loved ones,” Guinean President Mamady Doumbouya said in a message published on the presidency’s official Facebook page. The president said that the deceased was not only a wife and a mother, but also “a privileged witness and a discreet participant, alongside President Ahmed Sekou Toure, in the formative years of our independence.” “With dignity and steadfastness, she bore the weight of history and the trials it placed upon her, never wavering in her attachment to Guinea,” he added. He added that “she will be remembered as a woman of courage, resilience and devotion to her country, who endured the trials of our shared history with exemplary dignity.”
