At least 12 dead after torrential rains in Cote d’Ivoire’s economic capital

ABIDJAN, June 30 — At least 12 people died and five others were injured after torrential rains hit Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire’s economic capital, local authorities said Monday.

Heavy rains that began Sunday triggered landslides and flooding in several communes of the country’s largest city. Twelve people, including nine from the same household, were found dead under the rubble of their homes in the Mossikro neighborhood, located between the communes of Yopougon and Attecoube, according to a provisional assessment by the Military Firefighters Group. Five injured people were taken to medical facilities for treatment. Rescue teams continued searching on Monday for any further victims. By midday Monday, several neighborhoods in the city remained partially flooded, and major roads were rendered impassable by rising waters. The communes of Cocody, Yopougon, Abobo, Treichville, Marcory, and Bingerville were among the most affected areas, according to rescue and security officials.
