DAR ES SALAAM, June 7 — Tanzanian Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi on Friday called for strengthened environmental protection and sustainable resource use as the country marked World Environment Day in the capital of Dodoma.
Addressing the national commemorations on behalf of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Nchimbi said environmental conservation is critical to economic growth and people’s well-being, especially as Tanzania’s population is projected to rise sharply in the coming decades. He noted that the country’s population is expected to exceed 118 million by 2050, up from the current over 60 million, increasing demand for natural resources and social services. According to the vice president, the country’s Development Vision 2050 integrates environmental protection and climate resilience as key pillars for achieving upper-middle-income status. Nchimbi urged collective action to safeguard the environment, including strengthening waste management systems, promoting recycling and adopting a circular economy approach.
On sustainable energy, he highlighted that Tanzania has made significant progress in clean cooking, with the coverage rising from 6.9 percent in 2021 to 28.6 percent in 2025, aiming for over 80 percent by 2034. He also underscored the importance of climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies, including carbon trading, international climate financing and wetlands conservation.
