Namibia Mourns Civil Rights Icon Reverend Jesse Jackson

The Government of the Republic of Namibia has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson, the renowned American civil rights leader and global advocate for justice, who died at age 84.

In a heartfelt message of condolences, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah described Jackson’s death as “the end of a remarkable chapter in the global struggle for justice, equality, and human dignity.” She hailed him as a “towering figure in the civil rights and anti-apartheid movements, whose principled voice supported the oppressed worldwide.

The President highlighted Jackson’s key role during Namibia’s liberation struggle under SWAPO. “At a time when many Namibian comrades were mobilising international solidarity, including in the United States, he and others lent their moral authority and public voice to the call for freedom, justice, and total emancipation,” she stated.

“That solidarity, extended in difficult times, will always be remembered with gratitude by the people of Namibia,” Nandi-Ndaitwah added. Jackson’s influence helped spotlight apartheid’s injustices and bolstered Namibia’s fight for independence, cementing his place in the nation’s history of international support.

On behalf of Namibia’s people and government, the President extended “sincere condolences” to Jackson’s family, the U.S. civil rights movement, and the American people.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
