DAR ES SALAAM, Dec. 15– Tanzanian Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba on Sunday urged citizens to conserve available food stocks and avoid wasteful consumption following the delayed onset of the rainy season. Nchemba made the call while addressing regional and district commissioners from the Dodoma and Singida regions, citing forecasts by the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), according to a statement issued late Sunday by his communications unit. According to Nchemba, TMA’s outlook for the main rainy season indicates that some parts of the country are likely to receive below-average to average rainfall, characterized by prolonged dry spells and poor rainfall distribution. “Based on this forecast, several regions are expected to experience delayed rains,” Nchemba said, adding that the country currently faces no threat of food shortages due to adequate national food reserves, but prudent consumption remains essential. “We have sufficient food reserves, but I urge citizens to store food and avoid unnecessary use,” he said. Nchemba also advised farmers to prepare their fields on time and use agricultural inputs suitable for low-rainfall conditions, while adhering to guidance from agricultural experts who are conducting nationwide outreach.
