Tanzania launches strategic minerals research to boost industrial growth, youth employment

DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 13 — The Tanzanian government, through the State Mining Corporation (STAMICO) and the Tanzania Industrial Research and Development Organization (TIRDO), has launched a joint research and development program targeting strategic minerals, aiming to enhance value addition, spur industrial investment, and create job opportunities for young people. The initial implementation agreement was signed in Morogoro Region on Wednesday by the heads of the two institutions, who underscored the need to conduct mineral exploration, processing, and value addition domestically rather than exporting raw minerals. STAMICO Managing Director Venance Mwasse said Tanzania has made significant progress in the mining sector, and it is now time to ensure the benefits of the country’s mineral wealth remain within its borders. “For years, we have been exporting raw minerals, which have limited national earnings. Through this research, we will create new jobs for youth, expand the tax base, and establish local industries that use our own minerals,” Mwasse said. TIRDO Director General Madundo Mtambo said the collaboration will rely on local experts and modern facilities to transform Tanzania from a supplier of raw materials into a global producer of high-value products. He emphasized that the research will also promote environmental sustainability and support industrial growth, noting that sectors such as health and manufacturing depend heavily on minerals like iron and graphite.
