Mozambique president vows reforms to boost private sector growth

MAPUTO, Nov. 13 — Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Wednesday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to reforms aimed at promoting private investment, reducing bureaucracy, and strengthening transparency. Opening the 20th Annual Private Sector Conference (CASP) in Maputo, the capital, Chapo described the private sector as “the driving force of Mozambique’s transformation and the main source of employment and innovation.” “The private sector is not a competitor of the state, but a partner in building a prosperous and equitable Mozambique,” he said, adding that each investment should generate jobs, value addition, and better living conditions. Chapo highlighted ongoing reforms to streamline business registration, expand credit access for small and medium-sized enterprises, and accelerate digital transformation, all designed to make Mozambique one of the most competitive economies in southern Africa. He also reiterated the government’s focus on macroeconomic stability, infrastructure, and energy expansion, noting that major projects in transport, logistics, renewable energy, and agro-processing would serve as key drivers of growth and economic diversification. “Mozambique must industrialize, innovate, and produce with quality to compete globally,” he said, underscoring the importance of continued collaboration with international partners and noting the country’s stability and strategic location as advantages for trade and investment. The CASP, held under the theme “Reforming to Compete: Paths to Economic Relaunch,” gathered government officials, business leaders, and development experts to discuss investment, industrialization, and policy reforms.
