The National Mega Hackathon 2025, hosted at the Windhoek Country Club Resort, marked a pivotal moment in Namibia’s journey toward digital transformation. In his keynote address, Right Honourable Prime Minister Dr. Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare emphasized the power of youth-led innovation in shaping the future of the country’s public service delivery.
Under the theme “Reimagining Public Service Delivery,” the event celebrates the creativity and intellectual wealth of Namibia’s young people, positioning them as critical architects of the nation’s digital future. Dr. Ngurare highlighted that technology advances rapidly, often outpacing policy and bureaucracy, and Namibia must keep pace by leveraging the talents of its youth. The government’s role is to provide enabling spaces, resources, and opportunities for young innovators.
The Hackathon is a practical implementation of the recently launched National Digital Strategy (August 2025) by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT), aiming to harness technology for socioeconomic development across Namibia. The strategy prioritizes bridging the digital divide, promoting digital literacy, and delivering more efficient, transparent, and citizen-driven government services.
A notable shift this year was the MICT’s decision to redirect resources from the traditional ICT Summit to empower this Hackathon, signaling a commitment to move from dialogue to tangible innovation and results. The event brings together developers, students, innovators, and government officials to co-create solutions addressing key public sector challenges.
The Prime Minister outlined four focused areas for innovation: modernizing public sector job applications with online systems that promote transparency and accessibility; enhancing mental health support through tele-mental health services particularly for education communities; developing inclusive learning tools for learners with hearing impairments using multimedia and sign language; and improving resource and inventory management of educational materials for timely distribution.
Dr. Ngurare called on Namibia’s youth, describing them as the country’s greatest digital wealth and essential drivers of the National Development Agenda. He urged participants to transform ideas into impactful solutions that improve service delivery, governance, and data sovereignty envisioning Namibia as home to its own Silicon Valley.
The government commits to ongoing investment in digital skills development, open innovation, and startup incubation, recognizing that effective innovation requires collaboration beyond government alone. The Prime Minister’s vision for a Smart Namibia encompasses technology-led progress in public service, agriculture, healthcare, education, and entrepreneurship.
Acknowledging sponsors and partners, he emphasized the critical role of investment and mentorship in nurturing young talent. The event serves as a catalyst for fostering a culture of innovation at all levels of society, from ministries and schools to startups and communities.
Concluding, Dr. Ngurare urged all stakeholders to find ideas and solutions at the Hackathon that enhance service delivery, strengthen democracy, build citizen trust, and secure Namibia’s digital future anchoring development on youth empowerment and bold innovation.
