WINDHOEK, September 2 — The Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture (MEIYSAC) expresses its deep concern regarding the hospitalization of learners from Maria Mwengere Senior Secondary School in Rundu following suspected food-related illness at the school hostel.
According to reports received, 33 learners were admitted to Rundu Hospital between 31 August and 1 September 2025. Among them, 22 have been discharged after receiving treatment, while 1 remain under medical care, receiving necessary fluids and support.
Preliminary f e e d b a c k from learners indicates that several food items served a t the hostel may have contributed to the illness. The Ministry, together with the Ministry of Health and Social Services, has deployed health inspectors to the school to conduct a thorough investigation. The school has been requested to provide its recent menu records to aid in the investigation.
The Ministry assures parents, guardians and the public that the health and safety of learners is of utmost priority. Al necessary measures are being taken to ensure the affected students receive prompt medical attention and that preventive measures are reinforced to avoid future occurrences.
