EU Film Festival Lights Up Windhoek This September with a Celebration of Youth and Culture

The European Union (EU) Film Festival is back in the Namibian capital this September, spotlighting an exciting fusion of European cinema and Namibian stories in a vibrant cultural exchange.

Launched on Wednesday by the EU delegation to Namibia and its partners, the 2025 festival runs from 3 September to 29 October at Ster Kinekor, Maerua Mall. Film lovers can look forward to nine captivating European films shown every Wednesday evening, culminating in a grand closing night featuring two Namibian productions and an engaging panel discussion.

In a first for the festival, a special children’s screening will take place on 4 October, aiming to inspire young audiences with the magic of film. The festival opens with Miss Viborg, a Danish comedy-drama selected to honor Denmark’s current presidency of the Council of the European Union. This year’s theme, ā€˜Opportunities for Youth,’ highlights the EU’s commitment to empowering young people as catalysts for change.

Continuing its partnership with Kino Namibia, an initiative by the Namibia Film Commission, the festival will also host the EU-funded cell-phone video workshop in Windhoek building on its successful runs in Oshakati, Keetmanshoop, and Swakopmund.

EU deputy head of mission Ian Dupont emphasizes that the festival transcends just films: ā€œIt is about stories that connect us, bridge cultures and remind us of our shared humanity. We are particularly proud to shine a spotlight on youth through this year’s programme.ā€

With support from multiple EU member states and local film organizations, the 2025 EU Film Festival promises to be a captivating celebration of creativity, storytelling, and cultural connection.
